In a inauguration day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reinvent” New York City, declaring “a fresh chapter” and an ambitious beginning to his tenure.

A Groundbreaking Figure

The new figure, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

“A time such as this seldom arrives and rarer still is it that the public whose hold the controls for transformation,” Mamdani stated.

Defying counsel to lower expectations, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will rule with courage and vision.”

Steering by Democratic Socialist Convictions

Mamdani openly embraced his socialist politics. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will govern as one. I will not compromise my ideals for concern of being called extreme,” he proclaimed to loud cheers.

The inauguration was a two-part event, beginning with a midnight oath-taking in a former subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's ascent as a victory over the status quo.

An Ambitious Blueprint

Mamdani now faces one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a plan featuring:

• Free childcare
• No-cost bus transit
• A cap on rents for approximately 1 million households
• A pilot of city-run grocery stores

The projected $10 billion cost of these initiatives may prove difficult to fund. Mamdani has vowed to tax more heavily the wealthiest New Yorkers and corporations. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing External Challenges

The new mayor also faces apprehension from some members of the Jewish community alarmed by his past stances regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over controversial past comments.

Mamdani has attempted to ease these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, preventing the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was reportedly unexpectedly productive.

The Basic Challenges of Governing

Ultimately, New York mayors are evaluated by their ability in delivering basic services: trash collection, reducing the rodent problem, repairing roadways, and ensuring reliable transit operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's public safety record, citing record low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.

As his work begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a unusual warning about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his speech with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
